{"id":381,"date":"2009-08-19T14:33:01","date_gmt":"2009-08-19T18:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nickm.com\/post\/?p=381"},"modified":"2009-08-19T20:51:36","modified_gmt":"2009-08-20T00:51:36","slug":"presence-in-interactive-fiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nickm.com\/post\/2009\/08\/presence-in-interactive-fiction\/","title":{"rendered":"Presence in Interactive Fiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first issue of the <i>Journal of Gaming &amp; Virtual Worlds,<\/i> from earlier this year, sports a nice article by Alf Seegert, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atypon-link.com\/INT\/doi\/abs\/10.1386\/jgvw.1.1.23_1\">&#8220;Doing there&#8217; vs. &#8216;being there&#8217;: performing presence in interactive fiction.&#8221;<\/a> In it, Seegert sharpens the existing <a href=\"http:\/\/spot.colorado.edu\/~obrian\/ifrrc.txt\">discussion of reader-response theory and IF<\/a> to explain how IF may need to balance between boredom and overstrain and how the writerly role allows for new sorts of presence. He then conducts some good discussions of Jon Ingold&#8217;s <i>All Roads<\/i> (highlighting how the body of the player character is indicated) and Paul O&#8217;Brian&#8217;s <i>Luminous Horizon<\/i> (looking particularly at the subjective narration).<\/p>\n<p>Looks like a single issue of the <i>Journal of Gaming &amp; Virtual Worlds<\/i> costs &pound;18, unfortunately. (Institutional subscriptions are &pound;150.)
