After about 15 years of work, All the Way for the Win is complete and has been published. It wasn’t a joke! I sense from reading this blog post that my work on the project back in early March 2013 was frustrating me. That happened more than once. But the book’s out & available for purchase, and I’ve written a little about it in a recent blog post. […]

Comment on A Note on the Word “Zork” by David https://nickm.com/post/2010/01/a-note-on-the-word-zork/comment-page-1/#comment-977345 Sun, 12 May 2024 07:39:01 +0000 http://nickm.com/post/?p=665#comment-977345 It’s worth noting that the first print appearance of the word “Zork” appears in 1935.

https://forums.atariage.com/topic/353988-possible-origin-of-the-word-zork-lil-abner-april-21-1935/

“In his April 21, 1935 Sunday Li’l Abner comic, Al Cap runs a second spin off story alongside the Abner tale. This side story features a character names Washable Jones who is off on a series of weird dream adventures. On this day, though, Washable runs into ZORK – some sort of huge, man-eating monster thing that lives in dungeon. “
Li’l Abner introduced a LOT of pop culture references… I can see a nonsense word lingering through the 40s-50s, and being carried over as slang later. I can’t prove it, mind you, but…

In an interview with G.G. Lemaire published in French (Il y a des poètes partout, Revue d’Ésthétiques, 1975) Gysin says that the poems “were programmed on a Honeywell computer in 1965”. He doesn’t give the model but this seems to confirm that the program at least dates from that year.

Comment on A 6 byte Commodore 64 Demo by Nick Montfort https://nickm.com/post/2021/08/a-6-byte-commodore-64-demo/comment-page-1/#comment-955615 Tue, 18 Jan 2022 02:21:00 +0000 https://nickm.com/post/?p=5095#comment-955615 I was fascinated to find recently that way back in 2002, White Flame released a demo called 4byte that uses the same trick of modifying CHRGET to create the same sort of loop. And the demo is the same size: 4 bytes + 2 bytes load address.

So I was almost 20 years too late with this particular trick! I did improve the effect so that there is a more complex type of pulsing. But I must admit that some plagiarism by anticipation took place.
