In my experience, it is a criticism that quite often means that the speaker has his/her own determinism (say cultural, social, political, economical), that they don’t want challenged by having to consider factors outside the field in which they were trained.

In other words, charges of determinism often serves the function of limiting the questions that can be asked. Don’t worry about it!
