American History

by Priya Kikani

The project that is being documented here is an overview of American history told through the use of various constrained writing techniques.

Catalog Description

The goal of my project is to create a tapestry of American history unified by theme rather than contraint. I chose various contraints to represent suprising reoccurences in American history. For example, 20-constanant poems were used to describe presidential assasinations, and erasure poems hightlighted the various literary achievements of American authors. As for the chapbook's physical aspect, I was inspired by Professor Montfort's urging to focus on the material aspects of the chapbook as well. So, I took that literally, incorporating the ancient and modern materials that have shaped American history: wood, carbon fiber, styrofoam, cut aluminum, and rubber.
